Sometimes I get unique requests for cake smash session themes. I love to work closely with parents planning a cake smash for their boy or girl first birthday. And this time A's mom asked for hot air balloon theme in pink and lilac colors.
I started by selecting a fabric background which would make a perfect backdrop for my setup. Then I got some supplies from Michaels and start creating. I bought a giant balloon of lilac color and constructed paper cover on top. I also used paper garland and some ribbons attached to the basket to imitate the real hot air balloon. I followed some youtube instructions making garlands of small paper air balloons, which I fixed then to the ceiling with a duck tape.
The moment A was set in the basket she was all smiles and happy laughter. Of course, she grabbed all the strings and ribbons immediately ripping them off the balloon, lol. But I didn't expect a child sitting calm and cosy while so many interesting stuff is around her. In fact, I had a chance to capture those moments of joy when she did it and we've got beautiful shots with her holding those strings in her hands. She looked like she was ready for takeoff in her very own hot air balloon.
The next set up was a girly flower theme. I love these simple, but very soft, girly and sweet pictures. I used my backdrop stand to hang the lilac flowers on the same plane where A was sitting. That created some kind of framed look and allowed to avoid shadows on the background.
And the fun part comes to a cake itself. I made this giant cupcake myself according to our color scheme. A got very curious about it and explored the cake piece by piece. Once she got a taste of the frosting, she continued to feast on this delicious cake.
